The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued full guidance to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on balloon dilatation of pulmonary valve stenosis.

Description

This procedure is used to treat pulmonary valve stenosis.  Pulmonary valve stenosis is narrowing of the pulmonary valve in the heart. It is usually congenital.

Balloon dilatation is a minimally invasive transvenous procedure to dilate the pulmonary valve orifice during cardiac catheterisation. The procedure is an alternative to open surgical valvotomy.
