Evidence-based recommendations on insertion of a subretinal prosthesis system for retinitis pigmentosa. This involves performing a vitrectomy and implanting a microchip underneath the macula using a transscleral, then subretinal approach. A thin cable runs from the microchip, under the skin, and connects to an external battery and control unit. The aim is to restore perception of light, movement and shapes.

Guidance development process

How we develop NICE interventional procedures guidance

Coding for this guidance, and clinical classification codes:

OPCS-4

C84.8 Other specified other operations on retina

Y02.2 Insertion of prosthesis into organ NOC

The Clinical Classifications Service has advised NICE that currently these are the most suitable OPCS-4 codes to describe this procedure. The OPCS-4 classification is designed to categorise procedures for analysis and it is not always possible to identify a procedure uniquely

ICD-10

In addition, the ICD-10 code H35.5 Hereditary retinal dystrophy, which classifies retinitis pigmentosa, may be recorded.
