The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has issued full guidance to the NHS in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland on Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for refractory neuropathic pain.

Description

PENS aims to control neuropathic pain (a type of pain associated with damage to peripheral nerves, usually felt as numbing, tingling, shooting, or burning pain). The procedure is similar to TENS, but involves the insertion of electrode needles underneath the skin. Once the needles are inserted they are connected to a stimulator device with appropriate settings. The treatment can be repeated as necessary.
